Find the key of a song in three steps

  1. Choose an audio file

Select a recording for the audio key finder to analyze. MP3 and WAV are good starting points; support for other formats depends on what your browser can decode.

  2. Analyze the harmony

The song key detector measures pitch-class energy and compares it with major and minor key profiles. Analysis runs locally without sending your recording to a server.

  3. Compare and listen

Read the strongest estimate and its alternatives. Play the tonic and listen against the recording before using the result for a mix or arrangement.

Major, minor and the ambiguity between them

C major and A minor share the same notes. Their tonal centers differ, which is why a recording can score well for both. Songs that change key, use modes or contain mostly percussion may not have one clear major-or-minor answer.

Put the key estimate to work

Practice guitar or learn a cover

Use the song key detector to find a starting tonal center for learning chords on your guitar, practicing a cover or improvising. The recording may use a different key from a published arrangement.

Check a sample or demo

The audio key finder can analyze your own exported audio even when it has no title or artist metadata. A short one-note sample may not provide enough harmony for a reliable key.

Plan harmonic mixing and DJ transitions

Compare the estimated keys before blending tracks for a DJ set. Harmonic mixing starts with keys that work together; phrasing, rhythm and your ears still matter when planning a transition.

Questions about musical key detection

Is this song key finder free to use?

The local key analysis does not use recognition credits or require sign-in. Song-name recognition is a separate service with its own account and credit rules.

Is my audio uploaded?

No. This audio key finder decodes and analyzes the selected file in your browser. The audio stays on your device.

How accurate is the key estimate?

The song key detector estimates a tonal center from the recording. Relative major and minor keys, tuning differences, modulation and noisy audio can cause ambiguity. Confirm the estimate by ear; no accuracy percentage is promised.

Does it also find BPM or chords?

This tool estimates a major or minor key and alternative keys. BPM measurement, chord transcription and song-name identification are different tasks.

Can I find the key of a YouTube song?

Use an audio file you have permission to access. This local key analyzer reads files; it does not use a video URL as audio input.
